Vergne admits 'an excess of confidence' caused mistakes this season

"It's not the case anymore," said Jean-Eric Vergne, reflecting on his comment in pre-season testing that the only person he had to fear was himself.

"I found myself in a situation that I've never been before in my career. You have a lot of confidence coming in and this is when things can go wrong. And actually, things did go wrong in Marrakesh. I learnt from my mistake and I hope that it's not going to happen again."

After starting the race in second behind Envision Virgin Racing's Sam Bird in Marrakesh, the Frenchman went for an ambitious overtake on the inside of Turn 1 before spinning out into oncoming traffic. At the time, Vergne labeled the incident his "biggest mistake in Formula E."  

"I found myself in a new situation - being the number one driver in a big championship like this - and you have a different kind of pressure and I didn't know how to handle it at the time. 

"It was something new for me and I had to learn. You learn from your mistakes and luckily it was quite early on in the season and it didn't cost me too much but it was clearly an excess of confidence. But I did learn from it." 

Now, on the verge of the make or break championship finale in New York City, the defending champion will be doing his best to keep a cool head in the 82 degree Fahrenheit heat. With the potential to make history by clinching a second consecutive championship title, all eyes are firmly fixed on the 29-year old driver here in Brooklyn.
