TAG Heuer Porsche’s Pascal Wehrlein was the quickest man in Berlin, but the session ended with some confusion after a clash between him and his teammate. At their home race, Wehrlein was on a 350kW lap, when he tapped into the back of Antonio Felix da Costa and sent him into the wall. The session brought out the red flag, ending any chance of laps improving, ahead of the first of two race days tomorrow.
Wehrlein finished the session top, and was followed by Jakarta-podium-finisher Edoardo Mortara for Mahindra Racing. Jaguar TCS Racing’s Nick Cassidy was third – having won here last year – with Oliver Rowland in fourth. The Nissan driver has the chance to seal the deal and win the drivers’ title in Berlin, so make sure you’re tuned in. Dan Ticktum and Formula E’s most recent race winner, Dan Ticktum, was fifth for CUPRA KIRO.
As it happened…
Early into the session Stoffel Vandoorne was stuck in his garage, as he radioed about some concerns around his Maserati MSG Racing machine. Stating that his steering didn’t feel straight, he was forced to watch from afar in the first ten minutes of the session before eventually getting out on track. Meanwhile, his teammate Jake Hughes was top of the time sheets with a 58.529s as the session almost reached its half way point.
Felipe Drugovich was getting to grips with his Mahindra Racing car, making his race debut for the team in place of Nyck de Vries this weekend. He finished down in 16th at the end of the 40 minutes, having experienced this circuit before during the previous Rookie Tests season so far.

In the final stages of FP1, Wehrlien shot to the top but his incident with da Costa’s car brought out the red flags and prevented anyone else from improving. Both drivers seemed confused on the moment, with Porsche saying that they would investigate the shunt after the session.
