The initiative continues Formula E’s investment in inclusion, wellbeing, and belonging for displaced residents, including those living at Tempelhof Airport—home to one of Berlin’s largest refugee accommodation sites and the Berlin E-Prix circuit.
Announced ahead of the 2025 Hankook Berlin E-Prix, taking place Saturday, 12th and 13th July, the all-electric FIA World Championship has partnered with the AWO Berlin-Mitte, a national welfare provider operating Berlin’s second-largest refugee accommodation site inside Tempelhof Airport hangars, and Rückenwind, a grassroots NGO offering sustainable mobility and cultural integration opportunities through community workshops.

This initiative builds on Formula E’s Season 10 collaboration with the Better Futures Fund and reaffirms the Championship’s commitment to strengthening local solidarity through the power of sport.
In Season 10, Formula E launched the Better Futures Fund at the Berlin E-Prix, announcing its support for the two Berlin-based refugee organisations with AWO & Rückenwind as the first ever recipients. This partnership has continued into Season 11 with renewed purpose using Formula E’s race venue and visibility as a platform for inclusion, empowerment, and impact.
Located in Hangars 1, 2, and 3 of Berlin's Tempelhof Airport which directly neighbours the Berlin E-Prix race track — the AWO Tempelhof accommodation site is home to up to 1,600 refugees. The donation from Formula E will directly support them, as well as other displaced individuals and families across Berlin supported by Rûckenwind.
This initiative represents a powerful act of local solidarity, showing that Formula E is not only in the city - but for the city.
Funding Purpose and Use:
The €25,000 donation will be split equally between the two organisations helping both organisations to expand their meaningful programming focused on cultural integration, designed to improve mental wellbeing, skills-building, and connection for refugee residents. These initiatives offer more than recreation—they serve as essential lifelines for individuals rebuilding their lives.
At AWO the funding will be used to:
- To create a variety of activities for residents including basketball, painting, swimming lessons, digital literacy courses, alongside mindfulness and meditation - designed to support creativity, physical movement, mental wellbeing, empowerment, safety, and confidence-building, with special attention to those facing additional barriers to participation.
At Rückenwind the funding will be used to:
- Support the creation of a new community hub - a welcoming space offering hot meals, shared tables, and hands-on workshops in bike repair, storytelling, and the arts. Participants will gain practical skills, form social bonds, and find sanctuary in a space designed for dignity, autonomy, and belonging.
Engagement during Race Week:
Formula E’s engagement with the AWO and Rückenwind extends beyond funding, with collaborative activities planned during race week to support local communities.
On Thursday, 10 July 2025, Formula E employees, teams, AWO, and Rückenwind will join residents at the Tempelhof refugee accommodation to transform the outdoor area of Rückenwind’s bike workshop. Together, they’ll install sun-sails and repurpose donated furniture from past Berlin E-Prix events to create a shaded, welcoming space.
Along with a sustainability-focused gardening activity they will upcycle barrels into colourful planters filled with herbs and flowers, adding vibrancy and encouraging community ownership.
Rückenwind volunteers will also host a free bike tune-up station, promoting sustainable mobility for residents who rely on bicycles for daily transport.
The day will conclude with a relaxed group bike ride through Berlin, bringing together up to 30 residents and Formula E community members. Supported by Rückenwind, the ride will end with refreshments at a local gathering spot—fostering connection between Berliners, newcomers, and Formula E.
