Nico Mueller completes Geox Dragon driver line up

Nico Mueller completes Geox Dragon driver line up

Mueller joins all-American squad Geox Dragon alongside Brendon Hartley for the team's 2019/20 campaign in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.

Following Brendon Hartley's appointment to the Geox Dragon team last month, Nico Mueller will occupy the second seat for the team's sixth season in the ABB FIA Formula E Championship. The seat sees Mueller return to single-seater for the first time since his two wins in the 2013 season of Formula Renault 3.5.

After working as Test and Reserve driver for the Audi Abt Schaeffler squad for the past two seasons, Mueller topped the timesheets of the Marrakesh Rookie test for two years running. At the same time, the Swiss driver has been busy climbing to the top of the DTM series, where he currently sits second in the standings with his team Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline.

“I love street racing and I am looking forward to lining up against the best guys out there," said Mueller. "Formula E is particularly challenging, especially for a rookie, but I think we have an extremely exciting year ahead of us.

"We are looking forward to competing with these major OEMs, and I am pumped to be able to put pressure on the big teams right from the start in Riyadh.”

With both Mueller and Hartley joining the most competitive line up in motorsport, the pair will be racing against the likes of Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, DS Techeetah and Mahindra for the first time in Saudi Arabia on November 22. Despite only recently joining the team, the 27 year old has already been working with the team at the Silverstone headquarters to refine it's Penske EV-4 package ahead of pre-season testing in Valencia in mid-October.

“I have already met and started working with most of the Team. They are an extremely motivated group of racers," said Mueller.

"They have proven their ability to win races and challenge for podiums in Formula E. They have done it before, and we aim to do it in Season 6.”

“We have a big challenge ahead of us. We are an independent manufacturer, and the level of competition in Formula E is the highest in motorsport, but I have a lot of confidence in the Team.

"We have a compact structure, and everyone has a full grasp on the project, so together we will be able to move quickly and optimise the Penske Autosport package.”

With a history dating back to very first Formula E race in Beijing, 2014, the team entered the all-electric series after seven years competing in IndyCar. Founded by Jay Penske in 2007, the team has struggled in the series in recent years after a strong start in 2014, which saw the outfit finish runners up to Renault in the inaugural Formula E season. Most recently, the team finished its fifth campaign 10th in the standings, 199 points behind champions DS Techeetah.

“I am very excited to have Nico behind the wheel of the #7 Penske EV-4 this season," said team owner and founder Jay Penske.

"Nico is a fierce competitor, and with him, we have the pieces in place to compete with the major OEM’s in this landmark Formula E season. I look forward to very solid results in the upcoming season.”

With a complete driver line up, the team will take to the track with a full grid of 24 cars and drivers for the first time in the double-header in Saudi Arabia on November 22.
