The ABB FIA Formula E season finale in New York City wasn't exactly your average Formula E race, was it? After circumnavigating the globe, racing on the streets of nine different countries across five continents, it was against the iconic backdrop of Manhatten where Techeetah's Jean-Eric Vergne settled his score with DS Virgin Racing's Sam Bird, clinching the drivers' championship title one race early. For the Frenchman, it was "by far the highlight" of his career, but for Bird, it was simply "painful."
But it was far from over after Vergne took the title. In the second race, it was all still to play for as the Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler and Techeetah went head to head for the teams' championship title. After a podium finish for both Lucas di Grassi and Daniel Abt, Audi claimed the teams' title by just two points, making it one of the closest fought seasons in Formula E history.
Now that the dust has settled on Brooklyn's harborfront, let's hear how the season finale played out in the driver's own words.
The drivers' champion - Jean-Eric Vergne, Techeetah
"The 14 and 15 July 2018 is a weekend I will remember all my life. It was an absolutely incredible weekend and it will take me some time to realise.
"It's by far the highlight of my career - clearly. No question about it.
"I hope I'll come back better next year. I really want to make it again next year by winning the drivers' title but also the teams' title. I think Andre and I are very good teammates and we're going to do the best to win again next year. I'm very hungry for that.
"Honestly, when I first came into Formula E, I never thought I'd be here. I don't remember who I was but I was far from what I am today. [he laughs]
"Formula E still has a lot of surprises for the world and I'm very proud and very happy to be a part of the championship.
"There is still more to do. I won't go crazy because I won the championship this year. I will value it for what it is. My aim was not to win one world title but it was to keep going and do more than this. This is only one step.
"There is more of JEV to come!"
The teams' champion - Allan McNish, Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler Team Principal
"When it all settled down, it was just a feeling of sheer relief and emotion. There was definitely a feeling that you'd just come back from the precipice of a cliff edge that you don't want to fall down but we managed to stay on top of it, which was superb.
"In Mexico, I thought maybe we'd come fifth or fourth in the championship. Then there was the chance to get third, then second and then we set our stall out coming here, which was rather aggressive but we pulled it off.
"To be honest, that was probably one of the best fightbacks of my career. And I mean my career as a driver as well as my very short career as team principal!
"It feels superb, it feels absolutely superb.
"Season 5 is a completely different beast. It's a completely different car. What I see is that I now know that I have two very capable drivers. Two very aggressive drivers but with the capability to win races and work to the strategy that we need to do sometimes.
"We're making steps forward but we won't know where anyone else is until we get to the first race in Saudi Arabia."
So close but yet so far - Sam Bird, DS Virgin Racing
"It's been a fantastic season, a really fantastic season. It's just a big shame how it ends but all in all, it's been a stunning season for us.
"We've put everything together and I think that's the maximum amount of points that we could have achieved.
"Not one race where we could have got more, that's just what we had.
"It was still painful but I'm hungry for better!"
Au revoir to Renault - Nico Prost, Renault e.dams
"We knew it was going to be the end of an era."
"Obviously, we'd have loved to finish the season on a high but with three championship titles and 15 wins, everything that we've achieved is fantastic...thank you Renault for all you have done!"
"It's been amazing to have been racing with Seb [Buemi]. He's an amazing driver, there's no doubt about it. I think we work really well together. He's become a really close friend - I'm going to miss the team but I'm also going to miss having him as a teammate."
