Bird: "It's going to be wild!"

We catch up with the teams and drivers just hours before the 2018 Antofagasta Minerals Santiago E-Prix

Bird: It's going to be wild!

"It's Formula E - of course it's going to be wild," said Virgin DS Racing driver Sam Bird in Santiago, at the pre-race press conference. So far, season four of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship has seen Bird take the chequered flag in round one in Hong Kong, Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler's Daniel Abt get stripped of his (short-lived but hard earned) victory in round two and Mahindra Racing's Felix Rosenqvist rise to the top of the standings after winning in Hong Kong and Marrakesh.

Now...take a breath - so far, so good and, in just a matter of hours, we'll be doing it all over again as the lights go green for the fourth round of the championship in Santiago, for the 2018 Antofagasta Minerals Santiago E-Prix. Ahead of the big day, we caught up with the teams and drivers to hear their thoughts before the inaugural race in Chile's capital city.

Sitting at the top of the standings after all three rounds is Mahindra's Felix Rosenqvist who, after two first-place finishes in both Hong Kong and Marrakesh, leads the way with 54 points. "I love Santiago, it's a really cool city - it's great to be here" said Rosenqvist. "[The track] looks good fun but the surface is very changeable - you have a lot of concrete patches, which doesn't build up grip in the same way as tarmac does. I think you just have to feel the car the whole time and react to that...in every sense, it's very going to be challenging. The temperature is key here - it's going to have an impact on everyone's race."

At the opposite end of the standings is reigning champion and Audi Sport Abt Shaeffler driver Lucas di Grassi, who was delt another blow in the form of a 10 place grid penalty after the team changed the car's inverter. “We got to the bottom of the issues we had in Marrakesh,” says Team Principal Allan McNish. “We reproduced the problem on our test bench but the component is sealed by the FIA and so we were not in a position to fix it without incurring a penalty.”

After a stunning debut race in Hong Kong, Venturi Formula E's Edoardo Mortara will be looking to return to form after suffering technical difficulties in Marrakesh. "For me, it's only the beginning," he said.

For championship hopeful Sam Bird, sitting second in the standings with 50 points (just four points behind Rosenqvist), placing well in Santiago is key. After he spoke of suffering technical difficulties since round one, Bird is now confident all is well. "The issue has been resolved and the components at fault have been replaced," he said cautiously.

"It feels great to be here, it's the closest we'll get to my country (Argentina) in the season," said Dragon's Jose Maria Lopez. "My family and my friends will be here tomorrow - it's kind of like my home race - so I'm really looking forward to it," he added. "We need to keep our feet on the ground though - Marrakesh was spectacular and I wasn't expecting that. Hopefully, all the work we've done to prepare for this race will pay off."
