NEOM McLaren remembers 'dear friend' Gil de Ferran

Motor racing icon Gil de Ferran sadly passed away last month, and one of the teams closest to his heart, McLaren, will pay tribute to their "dear friend" at races across the championships they compete in this season, including with NEOM McLaren here in Mexico City.

NEOM McLaren will carry de Ferran's name on their GEN3 cars and on Jake Hughes and Sam Bird's visor strips at the Hankook Mexico City E-Prix. The team have also compiled a book celebrating Gil's life and achievements where drivers, team principals and anyone in the paddock who knew Gil can leave their messages and memories.

Before joining McLaren, de Ferran was a two-time Champ Car world champion and 2003 Indianapolis 500 winner, among many other racing accomplishments.

The team said: "Gil's time at McLaren Racing, both in our IndyCar and Formula 1 teams, has been pivotal in our forward development and his legacy will continue to shape our team's future."

McLaren will also carry Gil's name on their race cars at the following race events:

Formula 1: Bahrain Testing and Bahrain Grand Prix
IndyCar: Grand Prix of St. Petersburg
Extreme E: Desert X-Prix, Saudia Arabia
