Felix Rosenqvist: tipped for the top?

Felix Rosenqvist: tipped for the top?

Despite his age, Mahindra Racing's Felix Rosenqvist's mantlepiece isn't exactly short of silverware. As 2015 FIA Formula 3 European champion, a two-time Masters of F3 and Macau Grand Prix victor and a three-time Formula Renault title winner, the young Swedish driver has been quick to forge an admirable reputation in single-seater racing circles. Following his arrival in the FIA Formula E Championship just short of a year ago, Rosenqvist proved to be the most successful rookie driver in Season Three. Turning 26 today, we look back at the Swede's outstanding year in Formula E and find four reasons why he could be tipped for the top this season.

He grabbed Mahindra's first victory in Berlin
Without a doubt, Rosenqvist's finest moment came in Berlin when he clinched Mahindra's first victory in Formula E in the German capital. Passing poleman Lucas di Grassi before the mid-race car swaps, Rosenqvist finished the race comfortably with more than a two-second lead.

He ended the season as the highest place rookie
In a highly competitive field of rookie drivers in Season Three, Rosenqvist clearly took to all-electric racing faster than drivers like Panasonic Jaguar Racing's Mitch Evans and Venturi Formula E team's Maro Engel. With one win, two fastest laps, three Poles, four front rows and five podiums over the course of the season, the Swede finished the season not just as the highest placed rookie but as one of the highest placed drivers in the Championship.

He's got a great racing pedigree
Alongside his 2015 Formula 3 Euroseries championship title, Rosenqvist also clinched victory twice in the Masters of F3 and Macau Grand Prix. Before that, the Swede secured three Formula Renault titles and in 2016 alone, he raced Indy Lights in the US, made a couple of starring cameo appearances for Mercedes in the DTM and returned to Macau to challenge for his third title. Oh, and he also raced IMSA sportscars in the US and made a winning appearance in the Blancpain Sprint GT series. How's that for experience?

He finished third in the Championship with five podiums
Finishing the season in third place was a remarkable achievement for the rookie driver, who ended on a total of 127 points - 39 points clear of his seasoned teammate Nick Hiedfield.

While there's certainly a great deal for Rosenqvist to be celebrating on his birthday, all eyes will be on the young Swede as the lights go green on the December 2 at the season opener in Hong Kong. Can he continue to climb the podium?
