The story of the Mexico City E-Prix in the drivers' words

Mexico City E-Prix in quotes

After a particularly unpredictable E-Prix in Mexico City spelt disaster for championship hopeful Felix Rosenqvist and his team Mahindra Racing, it represented a return to form for the Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler with a long-awaited victory for Daniel Abt, alongside NIO Formula E Team's first podium from Oliver Turvey. With the dust now settled on the Autodromo Riccardo Hernandez circuit, we caught up with the drivers to hear their thoughts on round five of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.

(1st) Daniel Abt, Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler

"We came here knowing that we had a super fast car and 12 points overall in the team.

It's just a good sign that we didn't give up, we kept believing in it and today was just a fantastic day.

But we'eve seen that anything can happen - we saw that with Felix - and we just need to keep doing our best but for now, I'm just very proud of the team and it's been a great day.

The mechanics were very, very fast today - I don't know how they were able to do that but it was key for the victory and I'm very thankful for them.

[The minimum pitstop time] is very tough - it's tougher for the mechanics than it is for us, as for them, just one thing wrong can cost us the race. It can make a difference now.

[The Mexican fans] are amazing. They're always amazing. Really, really amazing.

I'm not sure I want to talk too much about [the disqualification in Hong Kong] but, of course, it was super tough to take - it was my birthday and my first win in Formula E and also it made the start of the season all the more difficult. If I had those points, I would have arrived in Marrakesh with them and things would look a bit different. But I've always said if we can do it once, we can do it twice and I think we've shown that today and I hope everyone from the FIA stays wide away from me today! Tonight, we celebrate!

In Formula E, anything can happen. You have to focus on every lap But I actually had a slight moment [thinking about the win] with five laps to go - just a slight one - but it got my heart rate up. But you can never be sure and that's why I tried to stay focused."

(2nd) Oliver Turvey, NIO Formula E Team

"It feels phenomenal to get our first podium in Formula E. I feel we've been close a few times.

The NIO Formula E Team has worked so hard this season. We were the quickest in pre-season training and I've always felt like we've had the chance to fight for podiums since the start of the season but the first few races have been quite frustrating.

To get the first podium is always the hardest, especially in a championship like Formula E, the level of the teams and drivers is so high now. I'm just really proud to be racing in Formula E and hopefully we can carry this momentum forward and get a race win.

I'll certainly be having a drink with the guys in the team as soon as I finish tonight - It wouldn't have been possible without them.

Last year was really tough. We had Pole Position and then we had the issue when I was in the lead.

I knew that we had the pace if we had a smooth weekend to be challenging at the front.

I was feeling pretty comfortable at the beginning and I was able to pull away from Sebastien. That was a good feeling, of course!

We managed to hold on and get the first podium, so I hope it continues on.

I felt confident to try and defend and I saw him coming down the inside, so I just braked as late as I could. It was a close race but I'm so pleased to get the first podium for the team.

It's always a great atmosphere here - you hear the cheer through the stadium on the first lap, so it's pretty amazing."

(3rd) Sebastien Buemi, Renault e.dams

"The first part of the race was the most difficult for me but then in the second part of the race, I was much quicker. I knew Daniel was too far ahead, so I was taking my time to try to pass Oliver and I was trying to wait until he was really struggling with the energy because it's really difficult to pass here.

I'm still quite happy because that's my 20th podium in Formula E and at the same time we scored points and we'll see what we can do in Punta.

I don't consider myself in contention for the championship because I'm not quick enough.

In the second part of the race we showed we were much quicker than we were in Santiago, so it shows we've made some improvements but we're still not there yet.

I've never seen so many people here, so I think the fans like it and they come back, so I'm really happy to see that because that's what we want to see. There were quite a lot more people compared to last year, so I think Formula E is growing and it's a pleasure to be driving in the championship."

Nelson Piquet Jn. Panasonic Jaguar Racing

On the team's highest ranking yet

"I'm proud of them, they deserve it - they worked really hard and they did a great job. The car's the most reliable, which is why we're in third place.

Qualifying isn't our strong point at the moment, so we just need to get that better and then we're going to be even closer."

Felix Rosenqvist, Mahindra Racing

On his unexpected breakdown

"I don't know what happened - I cannot really say at the moment. All I know is that it seems very strange for us to have this problem and it got worse and worse as I went on. It seems like some parts somewhere are broken.

I think we were unlucky but lucky at the same time that it was only JEV and Buemi in the mix that really scored points. We just have to forget it!

After today, I feel really, really good because this is the track I like the least - I was really worried about coming here but (apart from the incident) I had one of the best days of my career, so if I can do it here, I should be able to do it anywhere."
