Season review: Pierre Gasly

With only a day’s testing under his belt, and taking over the car that had won six out of eight races up to that point in the season, Pierre Gasly had both a golden opportunity and the eyes of the world on him as he turned out for a two-off appearance in Formula E.

With Sebastien Buemi unavailable, Renault e.dams turned to Red Bull-backed Gasly - one of the mostly high-rated young drivers in motorsport at the moment. But Gasly was forced into the background as fellow debutant (and ex-GP2 team-mate) Alex Lynn stole the limelight by grabbing a sensation pole position.

Gasly was 19th, a small mistake illustrating the tiny margin for error in the all-electric racing series. But while technical troubles prevented Lynn from delivering in the race, Gasly was in fine form, working his way up the order to finish seventh, ahead of seasoned team-mate Nico Prost.

This upwards trajectory carried over into Race 2, as Gasly recorded the outright fastest lap of the weekend to head the qualifying group stages, and bag a place in Super Pole. A small error meant he only qualified fourth which was where he finished. Over the course of the weekend, he’d scored 18 points. If he carried that average over the course of the season, he’d have finished sixth in the championship…
