Enel brings solar power to Marrakesh eRace

Formula E takes another step in reducing its carbon footprint

Enel brings solar power to Marrakesh eRace

The eRace simulators at the Marrakesh ePrix were powered by an innovative new solar plant supplied by Formula E Official Power Partner, Enel.

With the CEO of Enel Green Power, Francesco Venturini, on hand to witness the next step in Formula E’s journey to reducing its carbon footprint, the Visa eSports Arena was powered by a solar 5kWp plant, connected to a lithium battery pack.

Venturini, along with Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag put the power to the test with a quick race around the Moulay El Hassan track on the simulators.

Francesco Venturini, CEO of Enel Green Power said: “I am here because we accepted a challenge. The idea is that in the near future, this whole circus is going to be powered by green power. This is the first race where we have really brought a lot of equipment, including solar stations and batteries, and this means we are able to totally power the Visa eSports Arena along with other critical areas of the circuit facilities.”

Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag said: “Formula E is committed to not only promoting sustainability in sports entertainment, but to actually demonstrating that these technologies work. Therefore, having solar power for the Visa eSports Arena in Marrakesh is a great statement of our beliefs. But this is just the beginning, and together with Enel we will be looking at ways of deploying this technology across the whole of the paddock.”

If Enel’s battery installation in Marraskesh was applied to a regular home, it would be able to cover its energy needs for five consecutive days. And if used in combination with the solar generation set, it would be able to provide a fully autonomous power solution to an off grid home.

The combined solar and storage unit is part of Enel’s efforts to promote the advancement of Formula E’s power technology infrastructure. The energy group is bringing smart metering, energy management, renewable energy generation, storage and charging technologies to drive technological advancement in the electric street racing series. The reduction of Formula E’s race simulator carbon footprint is part of that effort.
