Alejandro Agag looks to the future of battery and motor technology

The road map of Formula E

The growing significance of the FIA Formula E Championship has been demonstrated by the number and type of organisations who have expressed an interest in becoming a part of the series in season two, according to CEO Alejandro Agag.

With the rules regarding motor and battery technology set to open up for the second season of the all-electric racing series, Agag has been impressed by the number of manufacturers – which include technology companies as well as car makers – who want to be part of the series.

"The FIA has completed the selection process in recent days and we will have a meeting to review the results next week," said Agag. "So I hope that we will soon announce important news for our series.

“A very interesting aspect is that among the candidates there are not only automotive manufacturers but also companies that are both able to provide the complete package, but also only a few components in which perhaps are particularly specialised.

"Together with the Federation, which has the ownership of the technical and sporting regulations, we want to work to define a kind of road map of the technological development of Formula E to identify areas on which to leave freedom and those on which freeze the situation.

“For our part, we would like to leave the chassis unchanged and define which parts of powertrain on which we want to push the development. Also, you have to set goals, especially with regard to the levels of performance and autonomy. As for performance, I personally am satisfied with the current level and my dream would be to get to complete an entire race using only one car: this would be a very strong message in terms of technological progress."

The ePrix of Punta del Este also marked an important milestone on the digital front. In the run up to the race, the number of Facebook likes exceeded 100,000 and, believe it or not, the person who took us past six figures was a passionate Uruguayan, Fernando Chevalier.

"It's a particularly significant result and I am very pleased that it coincides precisely with this event," said Agag. "The digital world is a fundamental pillar of our project; we want to build something that is midway between a race and a video game. The digital interaction is crucial.”
