DHL launches Formula E-inspired Design Award

DHL, Formula E’s Official Founding and Logistics Partner, has launched a new competition called the ‘Blue Sky Transport Design Award’ inviting aspiring designers to propose creative ideas to shape the future of sustainable transport.

Based on the vision of the FIA Formula E Championship, participants are invited to design an electric transportation device or vehicle for private, public or commercial use. The winning design will be presented at the final Formula E race in London, held on June 27 2015, and will receive a grant.

The award aims to address the challenges of urbanization and environmental sustainability.

Ken Allen, CEO of DHL Express, said: “DHL’s partnership with Formula E is based on our shared commitment to a sustainable future. As the world’s leading logistics company, we have pioneered green technologies within the transportation sector and our aim is to pave the way in moving the world’s future trade flows with the minimal possible environmental impact. Our hope is that the Blue Sky Transport Design Award will engage the public and promote Formula E’s electric agenda, while also attracting great ideas on how transport can develop and become more sustainable in the future.”

The award will be overseen by an esteemed jury including executives of Formula E, DHL, the Andretti Formula E racing team and Wired magazine. The jury will be chaired by Paul Priestman, one of the world’s foremost transport designers and founder of PriestmanGoode, an award-winning London and China based design agency.

Submissions for the Blue Sky Transportation Design Award are open until April 27, 2015, with the designs to be evaluated based on criteria including their originality, functionality, aesthetics, commercial feasibility and potential to solve the problems they are intended to address. A shortlist of five designers will then be invited to the FIA Formula E Championship race in Berlin on May 30, 2015, to present their concepts to the jury. The winning design will then be announced to coincide with the final Formula E race in London 2015.
