Season 8 in focus: TAG Heuer Porsche and Mahindra Racing

Season 8 in focus: TAG Heuer Porsche and Mahindra Racing

With the 2021/22 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship well wrapped up, and Gen3's bow weeks away, here are the highs, lows and blows from the seventh and eighth-placed teams in Formula E in a look back at how Mahindra Racing and TAG Heuer Porsche rounded out Season 8 and the Gen2 era.

TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team

Despite the strong start to Season 8, Porsche's third campaign in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship tailed off towards the end. After a point-less 'warm up' race in Diriyah, seasoned Formula E driver Andre Lotterer went on to secure a fourth place finish in the second round in Saudi Arabia while his teammate Pascal Wehrlein scraped into the points in ninth. Combined, the pair brought home Porsche's first 14 points of the season, setting the scene for the domination that would follow one round later in Mexico City.

After two seasons of hard graft, it was Pascal Wehrlein who clinched the German powerhouse's first Formula E victory in Mexico City, followed closely by hit teammate Lotterer in second. The historic one-two victory would yield a hefty 46 points for the team, boosting its chances of making it to the top spot, while marking a significant moment for Wehrlein, who had suffered a crushing defeat on the same circuit back in 2019.

Firing off the back of Porsche's greatest form in the championship yet, double-figure points followed in Round 5 and 7 before the team appeared to drop off the pace for the remainder of the season. Collecting just 28 points between them in the final nine rounds of the season, Porsche dropped down the standings table as the championship rumbled on into its second half. Despite not being able to capitalise after its masterful form in Mexico City, Season 8 showed a lot of promise for the Stuttgart manufacturer and, most importantly, proved it's capable of victory in the Formula E arena.

Mahindra Racing

Having struggled to make a lasting mark in Season 8, Mahindra Racing settled for eighth in the standings, despite a last-ditch points haul from British driver Oliver Rowland in the penultimate race in Seoul.

After Rowland finished inside the points in Round 2 in Diriyah, the team took its time to find its form, failing to score any further points until nearly half way through the season.

Finding their feet in both rounds in Berlin, Rowland and his British teammate Alexander Sims brought home a handful of points in each race, ahead of a season highlight in New York City, where Sims narrowly missed out on a podium finish - instead collecting 12 points for a fourth place finish in Brooklyn.

Appearing to save their best effort for the final stage of the season, Rowland defied the odds in Round 15 in Seoul, landing the Julius Baer Pole Position - his fifth in Formula E - ahead of the penultimate race of the season. To get there, the seasoned driver battled it out in a rain-soaked qualifying in the South Korean capital, outstripping his future teammate Lucas di Grassi (formally ROKiT Venturi Racing) by more than half a second.

Despite starting the race up front, Rowland couldn't hold off a determined Mitch Evans (Jaguar TCS Racing), who was desperately fighting to keep his championship chances alive, and finished second behind the Kiwi. While bringing home 21 points for the team that day, Rowland almost doubled Mahindra's season total overnight in Seoul, rounding off the team's eighth season in Formula E with a total of 46 points - 88 points behind Porsche in seventh and 10 points ahead of closest rivals Nissan in ninth.
