Graham Carroll calmly wins amongst the chaos in the first Challenge race

The sim racers didn't disappoint as they opened the first race of the ABB Formula E Race at Home Challenge, with Graham Carroll coolly winning the test race for Envision Virgin Racing.

After qualifying it was Graham Carroll in the Envision Virgin Car starting from pole. As the race lights went out for the first race for the Race at Home Challenge it was Carroll who bounded into the first corner blocking Marc Gassner in the Nissan e.dams.

Coming into the first corner there was carnage with a pile-up behind the leaders, giving breathing space for Carroll, Gassner, Kevin Siggy (BMW i Andretti Motorsport) and Peter Brljak (NIO 333 Racing) to make a break from the pack.

The first battle of the Race Royale elimination got feisty as Mike Channell (TAG Heuer Porsche) went toe-to-toe with Kai Bachini (Panasonic Jaguar Racing), but a spin from the latter meant that the 12-year-old Bachini was the first to be eliminated from the field.

Carroll was putting in a strong drive for Virgin, gradually pulling away from the field and extending his lead over Gassner.

With the leaders crossing the line to start lap seven of 15, there was a clear breakaway group with the top four running line astern.

As the drivers continued to succumb to the elimination, Steve Brown (Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler) appeared to be lining up a lunge on Archie Hamilton (Mercedes-Benz EQ), but a mistake from Hamilton handed Brown another lifeline in the Race Royale.

In the BMW, Siggy was all over the back of Gassner's Nissan, whilst Carroll continued to demonstrate a clear control of the race and extended the gap to the battle for second by 2.5 seconds.

With Carroll running away with the race lead, the battle for second kicked off with a fight between Gassner, Siggy, Brljak and Olli Pahkala (Mahindra Racing) joining the party for the fight for second spot. Coming into the Harbour Hairpin section, Siggy pounced on Gassner to take second place.

Coming into the final lap showdown, Carroll had a clear lead with Siggy attempting to close the gap to the leader.

As the virtual chequered flag waved, it was a smooth drive for winner Carroll with Siggy and Gassner rounding out the podium.

Next Saturday will see the competition ramping up, as the prize drive of a Formula E Gen2 racer is on the line with the winning gamer making the transition from the virtual-to-the-real world. Don't forget to tune in every Saturday at 15:30 BST. Make sure to download the ABB Race at Home Challenge calendar so you never miss a moment.
