Abt and Di Grassi confirmed for 2019/20 season

Despite fears of no contract for the rapidly approaching 2019/20 season, Daniel Abt has been confirmed alongside Lucas di Grassi as Audi Sport Abt Schaeffler drivers for the new season of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship, following the season finale in New York City on July 13 and 14.

With the news that both Lucas di Grassi and German teammate Daniel Abt will remain with the team for the 2019/20 season, the pair will embark on their sixth season together after the season forthcoming season finale this weekend in New York City. The pair are the only teammates to remain unchanged since the series launched in 2014.

With a track record of 40 podium finishes and a grand total of 1,027 points, Abt and di Grassi are the most successful duo in Formula E. With a partnership dating back to the first race in Beijing in September 2014, the two drivers have contested 56 races side by side and brought home the teams’ championship title in New York City last season – beating rivals Techeetah by just two points. With a gap of 43 points between them and DS Techeetah teams this time around, Audi would need nothing short of a miracle in New York City to secure a second consecutive title.

“We still have big aims for New York, so tackling the last two races and subsequent pre-season preparations with this confirmation and positive thoughts is even sweeter,” said Abt about his re-appointment.

“I’ve never felt as comfortable in a team and a series as I have with Audi in Formula E. I’m proud of the trust that’s being placed in me and will do everything to express my thanks with performance,” he added.

Abt’s refreshed contract follows doubts over his position in the team ahead of his home race in Berlin earlier this year. I'm not quite sure what the situation is for next season…I hope I stay at Audi but if not, then I need other options," said the German driver ahead of the race in May. Now, with a contract in hand, Abt heads to Big Apple with a chance – albeit very slim – of winning the Championship title.

“With eight title candidates before the final weekend, we’re currently seeing the most exciting Formula E season to date and expect the competition to become even fiercer with Mercedes’ and Porsche’s entries next season,” said Head of Audi Motorsport Dieter Gass.

“By confirming our two drivers early on, we also want to send a clear message to our competitors: we will be optimally prepared and are happy to take on the challenge. Besides meticulous development and testing of the new car, this also includes our clear commitment to our two drivers.”

Abt and di Grassi head to New York after missing out on points in just one race this season, while racking up two victories and three podium finishes. With all eyes on reigning Champion and standings leader Jean-Eric Vergne in New York City, di Grassi’s could be the only man capable of preventing the Frenchman from scooping a second title, sitting just 32 points behind him.
