Formula E receives renewed Three-Star FIA Environmental Accreditation

The all-electric championship confirms top level of commitment to the FIA's sustainability goals

Formula E receives renewed Three-Star FIA Environmental Accreditation

After we became the first category in motorsport to earn highly-acclaimed ISO 20121 certification - the highest award in sustainable events - the ABB FIA Formula E Championship has received a renewal of its Three-Star Accreditation against the FIA Environmental Certification Framework.

The certification came after an audit carried out during the New York City E-Prix in on July 14 and 15, which saw Jean-Eric Vergne clinch the championship title with 198 points to his name. The status recognises the highest level of commitment to the environmental and sustainability goals set out by the FIA, motorsport's governing body.

"The whole point of sustainability in Formula E is to reduce our environmental footprint or environmental impact and we have several initiatives that we have put together since the very beginning of the championship," said Julia Palle, Senior Sustainability Consultant at Formula E.

"Formula E is here to fight climate change by offering a solution in the form of electric vehicles, to improve air quality in city centres," she added.

Auditors noted that, since the inaugural season in 2014/15, Formula E has demonstrated significant development in its environmental practices and improving its internal level of developed routines, procedures and monitoring.

Key elements of the FIA Accreditation criteria include management commitment, communication, training and leadership, and also how the organisation manages specific impact areas such as transport, energy-usage and waste-handling, among others.

With our recent ISO 20121 certification, which follows similar guidelines to the FIA’s accreditation checklist, the series continues to be one of the best examples of an FIA championship promoter that implements an Environmental Management System focused on continual improvement and reduced impact in the running of its events.

“The ABB FIA Formula E Championship demonstrates great leadership through its combined efforts within Environmental Sustainability,” said FIA Deputy President for Sport Graham Stoker. “It has implemented an Environmental Management System to improve its operations according to best practice, and at the same time, is pushing forward and promoting new and cleaner technologies.”

The ABB FIA Formula E Championship returns for the 2018/19 season opener in Saudi Arabia on December 15. Click here for all the details.
