'Copy, paste' strategy for Evans as title fight goes down to the wire in Seoul

With just 21 points separating Jaguar TCS Racing's Mitch Evans from championship leader and Mercedes-EQ driver Stoffel Vandoorne, once again, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship goes down to the wire in Seoul as the battle to be crowned Season 8 Champion rages on to the finale. For underdog Evans, the Kiwi's aiming for a 'copy and paste' after winning Round 15 in the Korean capital. 

"Copy and paste, I guess," said Mitch Evans casually, when asked about his race strategy for the final in the post-race press conference, moments after winning Round 15. Starting third after a solid qualifying performance, the Jaguar driver closed the gap on his main rival Vandoorne to just 21 points, with a critical victory that keeps him in contention for the Drivers' title.

"Obviously getting pole would be would be helpful but obviously, I need to win the race and for [Vandoorne] to finish outside of the points, so we need some luck.

"As you saw today, you know we are able to do it. Vandoorne obviously had a strong race as well, and he and Mercedes cars are working really well out here. So it's going to be a really tricky day and - as is the way in Formula E - anything can happen but we won't go down without a fight. So it's it's all in tomorrow, have a bit of fun and hopefully a big result." 

After rain caused chaos in the race, Evans managed to slip past ROKiT Venturi Racing's Lucas di Grassi and polesitter Oliver Rowland to take the lead before the Red Flag brought the race to a temporary hold. "It's been a really up and down day I would say - we didn't really hit the ground running and we were struggling with the balance and overall pace, to be honest.

"So the rain was a bit of a blessing, just to mix things up. I got a really good drive off the line and got Oliver [Rowland] and then did a bit of a spontaneous move on Lucas [di Grassi] into into Turn 1. I was in a bit of an attacking sort of mind, considering my situation and the championship.

"After the break everything felt pretty good just just trying to manage the gap with with Oliver and obviously cover him off when when he went to attack. It was a really tough race to manage just because the conditions were changing with different parts of the track drying up quicker than others. The stadium section was like an ice rink.

With a victory in the bag already, Evans will need to channel the same mindset that saw him take back-to-back wins in Rome earlier in the year. That, and keeping Vandoorne out of the points bring the Drivers' title home for the Jaguar racer. 

"It's just exactly what we needed. We needed to win and have a good, big result and take the fight on to tomorrow and we've done that, so I'm really happy. We've got some work to do for tomorrow but at least we're in the fight."
