New car, new cities, new format and even more action

Season 9 is bringing an all-new look to mark the advent of the Gen3 era and the debut of the radical third generation machine - the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric race car ever built.

The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship is all set for its next giant leap, with a new look for Season 9 marking the advent of the Gen3 era and the debut of the series’ third generation machine – the fastest, lightest, most powerful and efficient electric race car ever built.

After testing in Valencia next month, Formula E heads to Mexico City on 14 January 2023, where 40,000 spectators are expected to fill the grandstands for what will be the first race of Formula E’s latest generation, with revolutionary cars, a grid of 22 world class drivers and the world’s biggest racing and automotive names set to compete for FIA World Championship honours.

The championship will continue with three fresh cities hosting Formula E races for the first time: Hyderabad, India (Round 4, 11 February); Cape Town, South Africa (Round 5, 25 February) and São Paulo, Brazil (Round 6, 25 March).

Tech revolution

Gen3 is the fastest, most powerful and most efficient and sustainable electric race car ever built.

The jump from the outgoing Gen2 car yields higher top speeds, faster acceleration, more than double regenerative capacity with a new front powertrain and some 40% of energy used recovered by regenerative braking over a race distance.

The car can hit 0-60mph (100kmh) in sub-three seconds, 200mph (320kmh) top speed thanks to its electric motor delivering some 350kw (470bhp) with double the efficiency of an equivalent internal combustion engine.

Sporting evolution

Alongside the revolutionary machinery on-track, Formula E’s sporting regulations have undergone evolutionary updates to ring in the new era. A lap total will replace time in setting a race distance, with additional laps added for Safety Car and Full Course Yellow interruptions to racing.

Later in Season 9, Attack Charge, using pioneering battery and charging technology, will allow the newer, smaller, lighter Gen3 cars to receive an in-race energy boost – delivered at a lightning-quick 600kW. This mandatory 30-second stop will unlock two Attack Mode periods with the cars running at 350kW vs the stock 300kW.

Upcoming racing talent will also get their opportunity to shine in the world’s leading electric racing championship with teams fielding rookie drivers in two Free Practice 1 sessions over the season.

World class grid

Two massive names in McLaren and Maserati are set to enter the fold for Season 9 alongside the cream of the world’s EV manufacturers and race teams on the Formula E grid.

The former is among the greatest names in motorsport, with 20 Formula 1 World Championship titles, 180 Grand Prix wins and three Indianapolis 500 victories to its name, as well as a Le Mans 24 Hours victory at the first attempt.

Maserati marks its return to single seater competition for the first time in more than 60 years and is set to become the first Italian marque to compete in Formula E. Both outfits have cited Formula E as key to their EV development programmes, as an intense sporting laboratory to drive learnings from racetrack, ultimately to their road-going offerings.

They’ll each race for the top prize alongside giants of the sport like legendary British marque Jaguar, American racing icons Andretti, Nissan, multiple Formula E champions DS, Indian automaker Mahindra, sporting legends Porsche, Chinese EV pioneers NIO, among the most decorated of race teams in German squad ABT Sportsline and the Anglo-Chinese Envision Racing team.

Electric Acceleration

Formula E takes on an all-new look for Gen3, with a new era built on Electric Acceleration – evoking the series rapid transition from an idea on a napkin to FIA World Championship in just six years.

The new identity is inspired by the instant torque of electric acceleration. The system also reflects the sport’s role as a catalyst; helping manufacturers accelerate electric vehicle technologies, the pace with which new fans are coming into the sport, the unprecedented speed that the sport achieved FIA World Championship status and more broadly the championship’s vision to accelerate sustainable human progress.
