Nelson Piquet Jr will forever be remembered as the winner of the first FIA Formula E Championship. The Brazilian clinched the drivers’ title by one point over Sebastien Buemi at the final race in London.
Playing a part in the championship from the outset, Piquet’s first taste of Formula E was at the final pre-season test at Donington Park. After, he quickly went on to establish himself as a title challenger with regular podium finishes and securing two victories at Long Beach and Moscow en route to being crowned champion.
With strong lineage in the sport as the son of three-time Formula One world champion Nelson Piquet, he began karting from an early age in his home country of Brazil. After winning three national championships, it wasn't long before Piquet Jn. made the step-up to single-seaters in Formula 3. In 2004, Piquet made his Formula 1 test debut for Williams before racing in the inaugural season of GP2 and participating in A1GP for Team Brazil.
Piquet signed as an official test driver for the Renault F1 team and eventually earned a race seat with Renault for the 2008 and 2009 seasons scoring one podium at the 2008 German Grand Prix. He has also competed in various American categories such as NASCAR and Global RallyCross Championship.
Ahead of the 2017/18 season, Panasonic Jaguar Racing signed the Brazilian driver, who joined teammate Mitch Evans for the team's second Formula E campaign. Finishing the season just inside the top ten, both Piquet Jn. and Evans remained with the team for its third season in Formula E, behind the wheel of Jaguar's Gen2 I-Type 3.
