Free Practice 3: Vergne leads the way into Qualifying in Rome Round 5

Free Practice 3: Vergne leads the way into Qualifying in Rome Round 5

Back on track for the second day of the 2022 Rome E-Prix, all 22 cars made it out for the final practice session of the double-header on the streets of the Eternal City. Leading the way was former two-time champion DS TECHEETAH's Jean-Eric Vergne, who set the pace with 1m38.608s, followed by standings leader Edoardo Mortara (ROKiT Venturi Racing) 1m38.866s and Jaguar TCS Racing's Sam Bird with 1m39.143s.

Finishing fourth fastest was NIO 333's Dan Ticktum who posted a 1m39.257 lap. The Rookie driver compared the Rome street circuit to the Macau Grand Prix circuit, of which he's won twice in his career.

With 22 minutes of the session left, Avalanche Andretti's Oliver Askew clipped the chicane on Turns 12 and 13, resulting in a Red Flag while his stricken car was collected from the track. Practice commenced with 18 minutes of the session remaining.

With rain overnight, the track was damp in places, especially under the trees that line some of the 3.38km Circuito Cittadino dell'EUR street circuit in Rome. The cooler conditions in the morning caught out Envision's Nick Cassidy who spun going into Turn 4 at the bottom of the hill.

Carrying too much speed into the chicane, ROKiT Venturi's Edoardo Mortara grazed the wall on a full-power lap, escaping with minimal damage and continuing on to post a top time of 1m38.866s.

Shooting past the braking point, DRAGON / PENSKE AUTOSPORT's Sergio Sette Camara missed Turn 4 and went straight on, avoiding any contact and damage to his car.

Rounding off the session, it was Vergne who posted the fastest time of the session while the drivers were on their push laps, crossing the line with a time of 1m38.608s.
