Haryanto: this is the future of racing

Haryanto: this is the future of racing

Despite being just 23 years old, Rio Haryanto is no stranger to single-seater racing. Starting his motorsport career in 2008 while competing in three Asian-based series in his native country of Indonesia, Haryanto's since driven in GP3, Auto GP, GP2 and Formula One. After flying out to Valencia to join the FIA Formula E Championship during pre-season testing, we caught up with Haryanto about his first taste of Formula E, what he made of the SPARK SRT_01E and why electric is the future of racing.

What did you make of your first experience in a Formula E car?
It was a great experience and the car was faster than I thought it would be. On the Circuit Ricardo Tormo, it's quite easy to drive but I imagine on a street track it would be really quite a challenge.

How does it compare with other single-seater cars you’ve driven?
The car was completely different to anything I have driven, you need a different driving style to that of a normal single seater, the most unusual thing was the sound, which took some getting used to at first.

Anything that surprised you about it?
The car handles really well and - apart from it sounding different - there were no real surprises. It took me a few laps to get used to the feeling of the car and how the power is transmitted but overall, it's really fun to drive.

What do you make of electric racing and, in particular, Formula E street racing?
Obviously, this is the future of racing. I like how it brings racing to the heart of some well-known cities - it's very different in that respect. Also, it's the kind of racing that looks great on TV - it's brilliant to watch.

Could you see yourself racing in Formula E in the future?
Obviously, there are some very talented drivers in the Championship and with more manufacturers coming into the series, it has a great future. You never know, maybe it could be something for me to look at! With FANBOOST, I am sure this wouldn't be a problem as the Indonesian fans are passionate about the racing!

How well do you think Formula E would be received in Indonesia?
I think the fans would love it, especially with a street race - taking the race to the people is what Asia needs!
