Argentina’s only current reigning triple-world champion and DS Virgin Racing’s Formula E driver, Jose Maria Lopez, spoke today to express his excitement over racing in front of his home fans. The electric street racing series returns to Puerto Madero for the third race of the 2016/17 FIA Formula E Championship in Buenos Aires on February 18.
In front of an audience of government officials, local authorities and Carlos Garcia Remohi, President of the Automovil Club Argentino (ACA), Lopez and Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E, discussed the passion Argentinian fans have for the series, with the Buenos Aires ePrix featuring on the calendar since the inaugural season.
Jose Maria Lopez, DS Virgin Racing driver, said: “I’m very happy to be here finally presenting this race in my country. The motivation and passion for cars continues to grow. The challenges that come from Formula E and all the other things that influence the performance of the car, from the tyres to the FanBoost. I want to thank the Argentine people because I’m really happy when I woke up and I see the FanBoost!”
The Buenos Aires ePrix has always brought action to the championship, notably being the setting for the most dramatic race of the inaugural season. When several drivers retired from the lead of the race, Antonio Felix da Costa took a surprise win only leading for the final lap to take the top spot on the podium for Team Aguri.
Alejandro Agag, CEO of Formula E, said: "It's fantastic to be returning to Buenos Aires for a third time in as many seasons. The two races in Puerto Madero have seen some incredible action and always feature strongly in the end of season highlights reel. Last season the eventual champion Sebastien Buemi fought his way through from last on the grid to finish second behind Sam Bird. One of the best things about Argentina is the fans - they are so passionate, enthusiastic and knowledgeable. South America has deep roots in motorsport and many champions across a number of categories, including three-time WTCC champion and DS Virgin Racing driver Jose Maria Lopez. The atmosphere in the city will be incredible for Pechito's home race - it's going to be very special."
