Piquet accuses di Grassi of blocking in qualifying

NEXTEV TCR driver Nelson Piquet Jr has hit out at Lucas di Grassi in qualifying for the Monaco ePrix, accusing the Audi Sport ABT driver of blocking him.

Both drivers had been competing in the first qualifying group, with Piquet finishing less than 0.1s behind di Grassi, but Piquet felt a move by the championship leader in the last two turns had ruined a chance for him to top the timesheets early on.

Piquet said: “It’s hilarious that he is the guy [who complains] night and day to the stewards about traffic in qualifying, and obviously he blocked my whole last sector, which he could have let me go. I would have closed the lap and let him go by, but he preferred to try and screw my main lap.

“Overall I would say three tenths was an easy lap and we would have done it. But he decided to block our lap, and hopefully the stewards will get something done.”

Dragon Racing’s Jerome D’Ambrosio in the second group put a lap in quick enough for third between di Grassi and Piquet’s time, while e.dams-Renault driver Sebastien Buemi in the third group snatched pole, meaning di Grassi will start second and Piquet fourth on the grid.

Di Grassi responded to Piquet’s claims when he said: “I don’t think Piquet was compromised that much.”
