Did you know that... Lopez won on his WTCC debut despite running as an Independent?
Jose Maria Lopez joined Formula E initially in 2016 as the reigning World Touring Car Champion. Joining teammate Sam Bird at DS Virgin Racing, Lopez drove for the team until the end of Season Three in 2017. In Season Four, Lopez joins teammate Jerome D'Ambrosio at Dragon Racing.
Before joining the all-electric racing series, Lopez enjoyed a successful career in touring car racing. In the early days, after a stunning debut in a one-off entry in the WTCC, he was snapped up by Citroen for its new programme. It was a marriage made in heaven and three straight world title followed, and took 'Pechito' back to single-seater racing for the first time since he raced in GP2 against the likes of Lewis Hamilton, Lucas di Grassi and Adam Carroll in 2006.
After winning the Italian Formula Renault title in 2002, Lopez became part of the Renault Driver Development programme, which led to him testing for the Renault and Minardi F1 teams in 2004.
